Prosecutors investigate discovery, looting of Roman cemetery

Burg al-Arab prosecutors continued investigations into the discovery and looting of an archeological cemetery on the Alexandria-Matrouh highway.
 
According to investigators, six defendants, including a former police major general, dug under a house on a farm at the 57 km mark on Alexandria-Matrouh highway and found a burial chamber containing artifacts dating back to the Roman era.
 
The defendants hid the artifacts in preparation for selling them.
 
The prosectors ordered the detention of the six defendants for 15 days pending investigation, and ordered the arrest of the house owner.
 
According to investigations, other defendants have funded the excavation process through high-tech equipment priced at almost LE500,000.
