Prosecution to investigate state medical care scandal

Egypt’s attorney general on Thursday referred the ongoing state medical care scandal involving the misuse of public funds to the prosecution for investigation.

The prosecution has received reports from the Health Ministry and the Administrative Control Authority accusing eight MPs of approving millions of pounds in medical treatment for patients who did not need the money, who were covered by other medical care funds, and, in some cases, fictious patients using fake names.

A judicial source said the prosecution will request a withdrawal parliamentary immunity from the eight MPs if their role in the scandal is proven.

“Why haven’t we seen those reports,” said MP Shams Eddin Anwar, one of the accused.

“No one told me there was a limit for treatment expenses,” said another MP, Gamalat Rafea, who is accused of approving treatments costing over LE10 million.
