Prominent sheikh’s ex-wife to run in Algerian parliamentary elections

ALGERIA — The ex-wife of prominent cleric Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi will run in Algeria’s parliamentary elections as a nominee for the country’s ruling party, local press reports said.

Asmaa bin Qada is listed fourth in the National Liberation Front’s electoral list for the Algiers, the capital, the reports said. She will almost certainly win because the country’s laws grant women 30 percent of parliamentary seats.

Tout Sur l’Algerie, an Algerian news website, quoted sources close to the ruling party as saying that President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika placed bin Qada on the electoral list. The deadline for candidacy applications is late next Monday.

Qaradawi married bin Qada — who is decades younger than he is — more than 10 years ago.
