The head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, voiced his support for presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, saying he is the best of all the candidates.
Qaradawi said Abouel Fotouh is the best candidate for the post considering his age and knowledge of Arab and Egyptian affairs, as well as ability to deal with those of different ideologies.
“When I asked the Muslim Brotherhood about their stance if Abouel Fotouh reaches the run-offs, they said they had not made a decision yet,” Qaradawi said on his Facebook page, adding that he has different opinions than the Brotherhood.
Abouel Fotouh left the Brotherhood after the group announced it would not field a candidate for the presidency.
“The Muslim Brotherhood are free to say whatever they want or make whatever decisions they want.” Qaradawi added. “I’m also free to say or decide whatever I want. From the current presidential hopefuls, I believe Abouel Fotouh is the best.”
Regarding the other candidates, he said backing Abouel Fotouh doesn’t mean underestimating others.
“They are all good people,” he said.
