Profile – Nevine Gamea, first woman since 2013 to become Minister of Commerce and Industry

Nevine Gamea has become the first woman to assume the post of Minister of Commerce and Industry since June 30, 2013.

Gamea was appointed Secretary-General of the Social Fund for Development (SFD) in 2016 and as CEO of the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise Development Agency in 2017.

She graduated from the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University in 1984 and holds 30 years of professional experience in economics and financial affairs. Gamea worked in the National Bank of Kuwait and the National Bank of Development (NBD), which changed its brand name to Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) in 2013.

Gamea joined the SFD in 2005 and developed its financing mechanisms, setting the first credit policy for funding small projects in April 2005. She headed the work-group which set the controls and measures for direct lending.

She then became the head of the SFD’s Direct Lending Sector and the Central Sector for Funding Small Projects in 2012.
