Pro-Brotherhood alliance calls for million-man demo on Friday

The National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy has called for a million-man demonstration on Friday in response to the sentencing of 12 pro-Brotherhood students to 17 years in prison.

The 12 students were punished for on-campus clashes at Al-Azhar University in October, in which students stormed university offices and demanded the overthrow of the "military coup." They were also fined LE65,000.

The alliance named the Friday demonstration, "No to Injustice."

Salafi students at Al-Azhar University offered their solidarity to their colleagues. They issued a statement on Wednesday describing the sentence as a continuation of the injustice and oppression that has defined the "brutal coup against the finest sons of Egypt."

A source within the alliance said the leaders are devising ways to make demonstrations and marches more effective, which would become apparent in Friday’s demonstration.

Ahmed Shaaban of the Muslim Brotherhood's youth wing said the demonstration would be held in Rabaa al-Adaweya Square and outside the presidential palace.
