16 people were injured, including six who are in critical condition, during violent clashes early Monday that erupted between supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and residents of the Old Salhiya city of Sharqiya. Both sides used birdshot.
Residents vandalized stores owned by a leading Brotherhood member in the city of Khaled Nowira. The stores were then looted by unknown assailants.
The supporters of ousted MB President Mohamed Morsy had organized a massive march after Fajr prayers to denounce the killing of 38 detained MB supporters as they were being transferred to Abu Zaabal prison in Qaliubiya late Sunday.
The pro-Morsy protesters chanted slogans against the army and demanded the prosecution of Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on charges of killing protesters, dispersing the Rabea al-Adawiya and al-Nahda sit-ins, and assassinating Brotherhood members.
The chants angered pro-Army citizens, leading to violent clashes. Security forces were nowhere to be seen.
