Clashes erupted on Tuesday in the vicinity of Mansoura University between students supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and others supporting Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Thirty seven students were injured during the clashes according to medical sources.
Members of the "students against the coup" movement, belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, staged two marches in front of the engineering and science faculties to denounce the arrest of their colleagues and demand their release. They also protested against what they describe as the "coup against the legitimate President Mohamed Morsy."
The marches moved through the campus then headed out the campus gates, chanting slogans against the armed forces. Angered pro-military students then clashed with the marches by the university gates and eventually onto surrounding streets.
Students from both sides used bricks, stones, belts and water bottles in clashes. Security forces stationed in front of the university then fired tear gas to disperse the clashes.
All university gates were then shut down to prevent entry to campus.
