Prisoner dies during mass escape attempt from Ismailia prison

The security services foiled a mass escape attempt at Mostaqbal Public Prison in Ismailia's Mostaqbal City on Saturday morning, after an inmate snatched keys from a guard, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The incident resulted in the death of a prisoner named Eyad Hassan Khalil, from the city of Qantara. Two other prisoners were shot in the chest and thigh and were taken to hospital.

The police said that while the guard was cleaning a cell, a prisoner snatched the keychain from his hand and opened other inmates' cells.

Other prisoners set fire to their cells and broke down the doors, intending to escape. Bloody clashes ensued before police and military forces gained control of the situation.

Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that all prisoners in Ismailia had been transferred to Mostaqbal Public Prison due to fear of attacks on police stations on the first anniversary of 25 January revolution. The number of prisoners at Mostaqbal had reached 300 inmates, the paper said.
