Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif has assigned Minister of Social Solidarity Ali Moselhi to set up a body to organize the production and distribution of subsidized bread.
Nazif also called for determining needs and monitoring all stages of production and distribution of bread to maximize the benefits of the state subsidy. He also urged the establishment of large bakeries to produce bread, replacing smaller bakeries, and called for a plan to develop state-owned mills.
Magdi Radi, spokesperson for the cabinet, said Nazif held a meeting with the ministers of trade, finance and industry to formulate a plan to develop the production of bread and reduce waste.
Radi added that the meeting tackled the difficulties faced during the production process, adding that there is a general consensus that the bread production process is still very basic, even though it receives LE12-15 billion in subsidies.
Moselhi had earlier submitted a report to Nazif suggesting the creation of a new body to oversee the production of bread, including ideas for restructuring the entire process. Moselhi said he will set the body up within three weeks.
