Press Freedoms Committee: Elections “disgraced” Egypt

The Egyptian Press Syndicate Freedoms Committee is condemning alleged violations of free press during the first round of parliamentary elections and will hold a press conference Saturday.

In a statement issued Friday, the committee described the violations as "the worst of their kind during Mubarak's rule."

According to the committee, the elections have caused a global political scandal for Egypt.

The committee deplored restrictions imposed on journalists who were covering the elections, emphasizing that attacks on journalists seriously damage Egypt's political reputation.

The committee will hold a press conference on Saturday titled "Against Forgery and the Oppression of Journalists" to show solidarity with journalists victimized during the elections, including Fagr Paper Editor Mostafa Bakry, al-Karama Paper Editor Hamdeen Sabahy and Wafd Paper Editor Mostafa Shardy among others.

Committee leader Mohamed Abdel Qaddous said the Press Syndicate considers the elections a political farce as he expressed solidarity for journalists, whether they were candidates or reporting on the election, who were abused by security forces and thugs.
