A potential Egyptian presidential candidate on Tuesday vowed to cut natural gas supplies to Israel if elected.
"If the people demand the peace treaty with Israel to be canceled, I will do it," former MP Hamdeen Sabbahi said at a conference in Kafr al-Sheikh Governorate.
Egypt provides Israel with nearly 40 percent of its natural gas needs, based on a deal signed in 2005.
Sabbahi also called on those who attended the conference to participate in nationwide protests planned for 8 July.
He urged faster prosecution for former President Hosni Mubarak, his family and officials from his regime.
Sabbahi suggested granting peasants ownership for the land they work on. He said new cooperatives should be established where peasants can buy seeds for the lowest prices.
Each village should host an independent syndicate for protecting farmers’ rights, he said.
“Current syndicates will be disbanded and replaced by democratic entities,” Sabbahi said.
Presidential elections are scheduled to take place before the end of this year.
