The presidency in Tunisia has been declared officially vacant, Al Jazeera reported. The head of the Tunisian parliament is temporarily acting as president.
Meanwhile Tunisian Television cited the head of Tunisia's Constitutional Council as saying that presidential elections should be conducted within 60 days.
The official Tunisian news agency said that civil flights will be resumed today, after several cancelations yesterday.
Elsewhere, an official Tunisian source said gangs are looting private and public institutions, calling on citizens to stay alert and cooperate with security to protect themselves and their property.
In statements to a Tunisian news channel, the same source said today that a hotline has been created for reports of these gangs.
The Arab League, meanwhile, called on the political groups, officials and people of Tunisia to work together to restore social peace and calm.
In a statement released today, the Arab League also urged Tunisians to work together to reach an agreement on how to pull the country out of the crisis. The way forward, it said, must respect the will of the Tunisian people and preserve the higher interests of the country, while respecting the constitution and the state's institutions. The statement expressed hope that this would help achieve Tunisians' aspirations for a decent and secure life in an atmosphere of democracy and political stability.
The statement also said that the Arab League is closely following developments in Tunisia and expressed condolences to the families of the protests' victims.
