Presidential advisor Essam al-Haddad left Cairo on Tuesday on route for the Russian capital Moscow.
The international cooperation and foreign relations advisor is set to discuss improved bilateral relations as well as the Syrian conflict during his trip.
A statement from the president’s office said Haddad’s main goal is “bilateral relations and methods of developing and boosting them through attracting more Russian investment in Egypt.
“The meetings will tackle the current stance of several regional issues. They will also highlight the importance of global efforts to reach a political solution for the struggle in Syria,” the statement added.
But reaching consensus could be difficult. President Mohamed Morsy supports calls for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, while Russia continues to back Assad’s government.
The visit follows a meeting between Morsy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit held in South Africa last month.
