ALAMAIN, Egypt, Sept 8 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed on Tuesday progress on a planned electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Greece, describing it as a strategic step toward strengthening energy security.
The talks, held during Mitsotakis’s official visit to Egypt, also covered cooperation in tourism, transport, labor and migration, as well as ways to boost trade and investment ties, Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed al-Shennawy said.
Both sides also reviewed opportunities for joint work in telecommunications, information technology, artificial intelligence applications and entrepreneurship.
Sisi welcomed Mitsotakis and stressed Egypt’s commitment to developing the historic ties between the two countries across various fields, noting that stronger cooperation would serve their mutual interests and reinforce their strategic partnership, al-Shennawy said.
Mitsotakis expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s hospitality and welcomed its hosting of the summit of the trilateral cooperation mechanism involving Egypt, Greece and Cyprus. He said Greece was keen to deepen bilateral ties with Egypt and cooperation under the trilateral framework.
The two sides also discussed regional and international developments, stressing the need to reduce escalation, contain tensions and restore stability. Sisi outlined Egypt’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability, while Mitsotakis praised bilateral cooperation on combating irregular migration and terrorism.
They also discussed developments in Libya, Syria and Lebanon and stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation along international waterways.
On the Palestinian Cause, both sides underscored the importance of maintaining the Gaza ceasefire. Mitsotakis praised Egypt’s efforts, while Sisi said lasting regional peace and stability required the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
