According to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s political advisor, Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah submitted his resignation on Wednesday.
Nemer Hammad was quoted by AFP as saying that Abbas had reassigned Hamdallah with forming a new cabinet.
Fatah and Hamas agreed in 2014 to form a unity government to end a seven-year split, which lasted since the legislative elections in 2006. The conflict ended with Hamas taking over the Gaza Strip.
Abbas' spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, told WAFA news agency that Hamdallah had not handed in his resignation, and that he continues to perform his tasks.
Hamas, on its part, criticized what it described as a one-sided action by Abbas’s Palestinian Authority.
"No one told us anything about any decision to change and no one consulted us about any changes in the unity government. Fatah acted on its own," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP on Wednesday.
Nemer, however, was quoted as telling the AFP that talks on the new government would include Hamas.
