Egyptian presidential spokesman Suleiman Awad said in a press conference in Washington President Hosni Mubarak has offered to host the second round of peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis in Cairo. The offer was extended to US President Barak Obama and is on the table until the 26 September settlements freeze deadline.
“If even Sadat and Begin themselves were left alone, they would not have reached a peace agreement,” Suleiman quoted President Mubarak as saying. “We did not come here to take pictures but rather to strongly participate with the US in resolving differences.”
Suleiman warned that negotiations could be threatened if the settlements freeze deadline was not extended.
“But we will never lose hope,” he said.
