Power inheritance was a main reason for Mubarak’s ouster, ex-FM says

The prospect of Gamal Mubarak inheriting the presidency from his father, Hosni Mubarak, was among the main reasons for the 25 January revolution, former Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit has said.

Private satellite channel Al-Qahira Al-Youm quoted Aboul Gheit as saying that powers granted to Gamal Mubarak for running the country under his father's rule were "terrifying."

“[Gamal] had a lot of authority to make decisions related to domestic policy,” Aboul Gheit said.

However, the former minister said Gamal “didn’t dare to consider Egypt’s foreign policy issues, as they were handled by the security apparatuses including ministries of defense, foreign affairs and intelligence.”

Since the former president resigned, officials who worked with him began to reveal the actual role of Gamal, who officially occupied the post of vice secretary general of the formerly ruling National Democratic Party.
