Power cut protest becomes showdown btwn Mubarak Jr., ElBaradei partisans

As supporters of would-be presidential contender Mohamed ElBaradei held a demonstration against recent power cuts–calling them a failure by the government to provide basic services to the public–they were confronted by supporters of Gamal Mubarak, ElBaradei's presidential rival and son of President Hosni Mubarak, who were left alone for the most part by security services.

Demonstrators, therefore, many of whom were accompanied by their children, left the site of the protest. Gamal Mubarak supporters, however, continued to shout at them and accuse them of "treason."

“We brought our children here in order to state our demand for a better future, without power cuts and water shortages,” said Abdel Rahman Youssef, coordinator of ElBaradei’s electoral campaign.
