Dozens of poultry traders staged a protest Friday, using cars loaded with empty poultry cages to block the corniche as they objected to a 2006 ban on selling live birds.
The government initially implemented the ban to prevent the spread of bird flu. At the time, experts questioned the feasibility of the decision and its potential effect on the economy.
The group of protesters described the ban as an arbitrary decision of security authorities and said it has caused them losses for years. They blocked Corniche al-Nil from the Foreign Ministry to Maspiro, disrupting traffic on the busy road.
Some of the traders said police confiscate their live birds during raids. They demanded an immediate end to the five-year-old ban.
