Population Minister Hala Youssef said Port Said and Suez have the highest rates of maternal mortality and the lowest birth rates, while Alexandria has the opposite.
She added during a meeting at the National Population Council that Alexandria also has the highest population growth rate in the Delta although health services are poor.
“Damietta is the first in terms of education and the status of women, while Sharqiya, Ismailia and Beheira are the lowest performing,” she said.
She said Aswan has a low birth rate and mortality of children under five, while Assiut, Minya and Sohag have the highest population growth rate in Upper Egypt.
“We need to reduce and redistribute the population growth so as to match our resources,” she said, explaining that the council works on strategies to optimize resources and direct them to the most needy areas for the executive authorities and civil society institutions to implement.
