The Popular Front for the Protection of Egypt, a coaliton of eight opposition parties, sent an invitation on Wednesday to potential presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei to attend a second round of debate next Saturday to reply to questions about his political program and his position on Egypt’s recent spate of popular demonstrations.
In their invitation, front members told ElBaradei that his Internet campaign–which utilizes a host of social media applications including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter–represented a “childish approach unbecoming of a man that seeks to rule a country the size of Egypt.”
“ElBaradei didn’t attend the first debate on 31 March,” said front Secretary-General Sami Hegazy. “But we would still like to talk to him and know his views.”
He went on to say that, should ElBaradei once again decline to participate, front members would pay the former nuclear watchdog official a visit at his personal residence.
“And if he doesn’t meet us there, we’ll stage a vigil outside,” said Hegazy. “We’ll say he’s merely spreading chaos in society.”
