Political parties divided over Friday’s protest against Emergency Law

Political parties are divided over the merits of Friday’s demonstration to be held in protest against the recently renewed emergency law.

While the Tagammu, the Nasserist and the Human Rights and Citizenship parties said they would take part in it, the Egyptian Citizen as well as the Reform and Development parties said they would not. The Wafd Party is still undecided.

“We are participating because the military council rejected abolishing military tribunals for civilians,” said Tagammu Party spokesman Nabil Zaki.

Nasserist Party Organization Secretary Mohamed al-Sayed said the military council fails to justify the emergency law by pointing to the poor security situation and the proliferation of thuggery. “This is no excuse. The Penal Code has enough penalties to ensure stable security,” he said.
