A policeman was killed and another injured on Tuesday while trying to arrest a gunman in Qalyubiya.
A statement by the Interior Ministry said Hazem Azab, a police captain with the Cairo Security Directorate, and accompanying police personnel were patrolling the Cairo ring road near the border with Qalyubiya Governorate, south of the city.
When the officers went to inspect a car suspiciously parked on the side of the road, they noticed one automatic rifle and another outfitted with a scope. The man driving the car then began firing at the officers.
Azab was shot at the head and Hussein Ibrahim, a police sergeant, was shot in his left leg. Both were later transferred to a nearby hospital, where Azab died.
Security services are currently looking for the gunman, and the public prosecution was notified of the incident in order to begin an investigation.
