Policeman killed, 2 wounded in Beni Suef shooting

One policeman was killed and two others were wounded early Tuesday when unknown assailants shot at a makeshift checkpoint on the Beni Suef-Minya road in Upper Egypt.

A security source said the police officer who died is Emad Rabee, from Enfasat village.

The wounded personnel were taken to the Baba Central Hospital and Beni Suef General Hospital, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Sergeant Nour Abdel Fattah, 34, received a bird shot to the head, and soldier Mohamed Mostafa Hussein, 20, was shot in the arm. According to the source, the injured are in serious condition.

Security forces combed the surrounding area of the incident in search for the perpetrators.

Police and army personnel have been targeted by fatal attacks across the country which have left at least 700 personnel dead since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. The Beni Suef attack, which took place hours after the assassination of Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat in a Cairo bombing on Monday, came as Egypt marks two years since Morsi’s overthrow.

Authorities blame Morsi’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood for masterminding attacks against security and public utilities.
