Policeman charged with Minya train shooting to stand trial next month

A gunman who boarded a train in Upper Egypt last week and opened fire on Christian commuters will face trial on 5 February, the Beni Suef Court of Appeals announced on Monday.

The gunman, an off-duty Muslim policeman named Amer Ashour Abdelzaher, began shooting passengers aboard a Cairo-Assuit train as it entered Minya's Samalut Train Station en route to the capital, killing 71-year-old Fathi Ghattas and injuring five other Coptic Christians. Abdelzaher was immediately arrested by the authorities.

Last week, Egypt's Attorney General referred Abdelzaher to the Emergency Supreme State Security Court on charges of "using violence and intimidation to disrupt security and public order" and "endangering security on public transport."

He has also been charged with premeditated murder and attempted murder.
