Police arrested nine Africans trying to sneak into Israel via Sinai on Sunday.
A police patrol noticed the infiltrators and fired, which prompted them to stop, said a security source. Five of the infiltrators were Eritrean, while the other four were from Darfur in Sudan.
During investigations, the nine said that they tried to sneak into Israel to find jobs and that they paid US$1000 to human trafficking groups to help.
Israel claims that approximately 10,000 Africans have illegally entered its borders via Egypt over the past few years.
International organizations accused Egypt of using excessive force on detainees. Egypt, in response, asserted its right to use force to protect its national security.
