Police officer shot by undocumented migrants in Sinai

A police officer was injured in Sinai while attempting to prevent undocumented migrants from crossing the border to Israel.

Captain Ahmed Abdel Metwally, 31, a Central Security Forces officer in North Sinai, was shot by undocumented migrants Friday, a security source said. The source said that the officer was south of the Rafah Crossing at Karam Abu Salem Port when he encountered a group of immigrants trying to cross the border. When he tried to stop them, he was shot in his left foot, and the migrants were not apprehended.

The officer was transported to the Rafah hospital, and police authorities said they were launching investigations.

Egyptian authorities often struggle to control undocumented African migrants trying to cross into Israel, who try to migrate in search of better oppurtunities.
