Police officer killed, two conscripts injured in Rafah IED blast

A police officer was killed and two conscripts from the Central Security Forces injured in an IED blast in Rafah City, North Sinai, on Wednesday.

Security sources said the IED detonated as an armored vehicle passed by on the international road, killing a lieutenant and injuring two conscripts. The perpetrators had planted the IED on the side of the road.

The victims and the dead body were transferred to Arish Military Hospital and a claim was filed concerning the incident.

Confrontations between militants and the armed forces flared up in North Sinai following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Egypt has announced since its engagement in a war against terrorism on the peninsula.

Security forces are often the target of ambushes, mortar attacks and roadside bomb attacks in the North Sinai governorate, with reports of attacks on security personnel and conscripts being a weekly occurrence.

Last Sunday, a conscript from the North Sinai security troops was shot dead by a sniper while standing on duty at a security checkpoint, south of Sheikh Zuwaid. In a similar incident the previous Sunday, a police officer was killed and a conscript injured in an IED blast in Central Sinai.
