Police officer indicted in Sayed Bilal’s murder turns himself in

Osama al-Kanisy, an officer from the disbanded State Security Bureau, turned himself in to the Alexandria public prosecutor on Thursday, requesting a retrial in the case of the murder of Sayed Bilal.

Kanisy was sentenced in absentia to life in prison for his role in the killing of Bilal, a Salafi who was arrested in connection to the Two Saints Church bombing in Alexandria in 2011. His colleague Mahmoud Abdel Alim was acquitted of the crime in December.

Bilal’s death provoked outrage against state security, and the incident is widely perceived as contributing to the revolution that toppled the Mubarak regime.
