Police detain suspects in Luxor-area clashes that injured 8

Luxor prosecution remanded two suspects for four days pending investigations into clashes in the village of Rawafaa. The defendants were accused of attempted murder and severely injuring eight people, possessing firearms without a license and terrorizing citizens.

The prosecution ordered that five others be arrested on the same charges.

Rawafaa citizens exchanged fire with the Sharif family Saturday during clashes over a plot of land. Eight people were injured. Village residents say that the land is owned by the state, while the Sharifs maintain that the plot, which is planted with old fruit trees, belongs to them.

The Sharifs returned to the land after police muscled them out on Sunday following an exchange of fire. A two-hour shoot-out injured a soldier, Kamil Wahib, 23, who took bullets in the arm and the chest. Wahib was transferred to Luxor International Hospital for treatment.

Villagers blocked the tourist road for three hours demanding that the police rescue them from attacks by the Sharif family.
