A colonel from Cairo’s traffic control department died Monday of injuries he had sustained in a blast a week ago in Heliopolis, east of Cairo.
Hesham al-Azab was hospitalized immediately after the IED bombing. Two other colleagues were also wounded in the attack.
Bombings and gun attacks have claimed the lives of more than 700 army and police personnel since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. The government blames the political opposition, Morsi’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, for backing the attacks, though the organization has denounced violence.
