Police arrest 27 ‘thugs’ around Egypt

Forces from the military and the police arrested 27 people over the past three days, in a continued joint effort to restore security in the capital and governorates.

Since the outbreak of the Egyptian revolution on 25 January, the country witnessed instability, mainly because of the security void that followed the uprising.

Some loyalists of the ousted President Hosni Mubarak opened prisons and set free criminals during the early days of revolution, in order to sow chaos in the country.

Security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that eight of those arrested during the past three days were referred to the military prosecutor for illegally possessing firearms and ammunition, while the rest were referred to attorney general for investigation.

In Cairo, 20 suspects were apprehended: eight for possessing bladed weapons, three for possessing drugs, four for thuggary and intimidating people, two for robbery, and three for being drunk and illegally possessing firearms.

The arrests were made in New Cairo, Nasr City, Ain Shams, Haram, Darb al-Ahmar, Helwan, Misr al-Qadima and other areas.

Of the 27 people arrested, seven were taken into custody in the governorates of Ismailia, Daqahlia and South Sinai.

One was arrested for possessing a firearm, one for possessing a bladed weapon, three for thuggary, and two for robbery.
