Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly called for relying on local components in all wind energy projects across the country and reducing the import of foreign components.
Madbouly’s call came while he was inspecting the 650-megawatt wind farm in the Red Sea city of Ras Ghareb on Tuesday.
The prime minister was accompanied by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and a number of the electricity ministry’s officials, as well as officials of companies responsible for implementing the project.
The premier was briefed on the project’s main components and the timetable for operating the wind farm.
Khaled al-Degwy, Head of the Red Sea Wind Energy Company said the project is located 40 kilometers northwest of Ras Gharib, spanning an area of​​approximately 70 square kilometers.
He added the project is part of the Egyptian government’s plan to leverage the rich wind resources in the Gulf of Suez.
The farm is constructed by a consortium of Orascom Construction PLC, ENGIE (France) and Toyota Tsusho Corporation/Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Japan) under the 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
Once operational, the USD-780-million farm will generate clean energy for over 1 million households and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons annually, supporting Egypt’s transition to renewable energy.
