Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, accompanied by Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh al-Damaty and Minister of Tourism Hisham Zazou, plans to inaugurate the Sphinx statue and the Temple of Amenhotep on Sunday after the completion of the maintenance work. The two sites have been under maintenance for three years in the framework of a project to develop the ancient pyramids area.
Damaty said Sphinx underwent renovations in the neck and chest, which represent the weakest areas in the statue.
He added that the statue's stones had been suffering from severe cracking due to erosion. The Sphinx has not been renovated since 2010, Damaty pointed out.
The move comes in an effort to restore cultural tourism in the country.
