Egypt's new prime minister, Kamal al-Ganzouri, said on Tuesday that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) will amend the Interim Constitution, granting presidential powers to the prime minister.
Amendments will be made to Article 56 and Article 57, with a view to giving the prime minister the powers of president, although not extending to powers over the judiciary or the armed forces, Ganzouri told the press.
The prime minister is to meet on Wednesday with the ministers in his new cabinet, which he has been in the process of putting together over the past two weeks. After the meeting, the names of the new ministers will be publicly announced, and they will be sworn into office by the end of this week.
Ganzouri met with Field Marshal Tantawi, head of the SCAF, on Monday to discuss candidates for the new government. The meeting went on for less than 15 minutes, sources close to Ganzouri told al-Masry Al-Youm, and by the end of the discussions he had still not agreed on a final list of ministers.
