PM: Egypt plans to host int’l conference on Gaza’s early recovery, reconstruction

DOHA, Nov 3 (MENA) – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Monday said Egypt plans to host an international conference on early recovery, reconstruction and development in the Gaza Strip, adding the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit played a crucial role in re-establishing peace and stability in the Middle East and launching recovery and reconstruction efforts in the Palestinian enclave.

Madbouly’s remarks came in a speech that he delivered on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, at the First Leaders’ Summit of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty held in Doha, Qatar.

The premier called on the attendees to take part in the Cairo Conference for Early Recovery and Reconstruction in Gaza.

Madbouly added that hunger and poverty remain among the most pressing challenges at the present time, citing the famine in Gaza clearly shows how conflicts can devastate lives and deprive people of their basic human rights.

He stated that more than two billion people around the world are suffering from food insecurity to varying degrees, while one in five Africans face hunger on a daily basis.

The prime minister stressed that hunger and poverty are linked with other structural challenges, including high debt levels and the decline in official development assistance.

He called for urgently reforming the global financial architecture and strengthening international economic governance to address these challenges.

Madbouly highlighted Egypt’s efforts to expand social protection programs, noting that the Takaful and Karama program provides monthly cash assistance to more than seven million families, helping to alleviate poverty and improve living standards.

He also pointed to the Decent Life (Haya Karima) initiative, which is aimed at achieving comprehensive and sustainable development in Egypt’s countryside.

Madbouly explained this initiative targets more than 60 million citizens, reflecting Egypt’s firm commitment to eradicating poverty and advancing sustainable development.

Madbouly outlined Egypt’s measures to enhance food security, citing the completion of a national silos project that added 1.5 million tons of storage capacity through the construction of 50 new silos across 17 governorates. This has raised the country’s total strategic wheat reserve to more than six million tons.

He also announced that Egypt launched the Luxor Coordination Centre, which was established with the World Food Programme (WFP), to boost innovation and resilience in Upper Egypt.

The prime minister said Egypt is working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
to set up a global grain storage hub in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty (GAHP) was launched in late 2024 under Brazil’s G20 presidency to accelerate global efforts to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty.

Announced by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the alliance comprises more than 140 members, including governments, international organizations, development banks, and philanthropic foundations.

It is co-chaired by Brazil and Spain, with operational support provided by the FAO in Rome. (MENA)
