A family from Alexandria said Wednesday plain-clothed security agents kidnapped their daughter’s groom during their wedding, a claim denied by sources at the Interior Ministry.
Young Badr al-Gamal was kidnapped from a convoy of well-wishers when security agents allegedly blocked their way.
“I was driving the bride and groom’s car…we were suprised when a microbus and police vehicle intercepted our way…pointing guns at us…they took Badr in the microbus,” Abdel Rahman Ali, the bride’s brother, told Al-Masry Al-Youm. “We are totally stunned.”
It was not clear whether al-Gamal had a past of political activism, but Egyptian rights advocates have decried a months-old wave of enforced disapperances of political activists where targets are taken to unknown destinations.
Ali said his brother-in-law works as a detergents seller.
Security sources denied the incident. “Muslim Brotherhood members are promoting such a rumor,” one source said.
A Twitter hashtag that translated to “They kidnapped the groom” attracted several users on Thursday after word of the reported kidnapping hit the press.
