In photos: Trial session in prosecutor assassination case turns into engagement celebration

Tuesday's Cairo Criminal Court session for the trial of defendants in the assassination of late Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat on Tuesday turned into an engagement celebration.

Families of defendants and the detainees rejoiced when mother of the defendant Osama Abu al-Nil gave his fiancée Shimaa Hussain a ring as part of her dowry in the court hall.

Sixty-seven defendants are standing trial for killing Barakat, 15 are being tried in absentia. During this trial session, the court ruled that the 52 defendants will remain in custody.

The defendants face charges of premeditated murder, association with a terrorist organization and being in possession of weapons and explosives.

Barakat died of his injuries after a car-bomb attack in Cairo on June 29, 2015. The car bomb struck his convoy as it was leaving his home in Cairo.

Barakat was appointed as chief prosecutor following the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
