Pharmacists prepare agreement on expired medications

Pharmacists have prepared a strategy for getting rid of expired medicine, stressing that the failure to ensure a thorough process to handle expired products poses a “national security” threat.

Sabry al-Tawila, head of the medicine industry commission at the Pharmacists' Syndicate, said in a statement on Wednesday that the crisis of expired medications “is related to national security and patients health and not only a sheerly commercial issue as claimed by some pharmaceuticals companies.”

Tawila warned that inefficient control over expired medications could open channels for “unconscientious” groups to recycle them.

He said the syndicate had concluded a draft agreement to free the market of expired medications, the provisions of which are scheduled to be announced on October 4.
