Pharaohs tame the lions of Cameroon

Egypt defeated Cameroon 3-1 in overtime in an Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals match on Monday.

Egypt, which won the last African Cup in 2008, is the third team to qualify for the semi-finals, along with Ghana and Algeria.
 
The game also marked Ahmed Hassan’s 170th appearance in an international competition playing for Egypt.

Cameroon scored in the 26th minute thanks to an own-goal by Hassan, who knocked a corner by Cameroonian Achille Emana into the net. Hassan made amends by scoring in the 37th minute. Neither team scored again until the end of the second half.
 
Egypt’s Mohamed Nagui Geddo scored two minutes into overtime, followed by a controversial free kick by Hassan in the 95th minute which was tipped onto the bar by Cameroonian goalkeeper Kameni, then bounced down in front of the line. Referee Damon Jerome confirmed the goal.

The Egyptian national team will play Algeria on Thursday. Whoever of the two teams wins, a place is now secured in the finals for an Arab team.
