Finance Minister Momtaz al-Saeed told Parliament’s Budget and Planning Committee on Thursday that devising permanent contracts for 400,000 temporary workers every year costs LE3 billion, which could be generated from the private funds of government institutions.
“But we also need to address unemployment,” the minister said.
Saeed said requests to set a maximum wage would not alleviate the state budget much, as some believe. “The government has money, but it needs to manage it well,” he said.
Committee chairman Saad al-Husseiny blamed the government for employing large numbers of workers after the revolution. “This is a crime,” he said. “For they are not needed.”
Parliament had passed a draft law on Wednesday regarding permanent contracts for the employees who had served three months under temporary contracts.
