The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) on Saturday approved Mohamed Saad al-Katatny’s resignation as the party's secretary general since he is expected to become People's Assembly Speaker.
Mohamed Morsy, leader of the FJP, in a statement published on the party’s official Facebook page, said that the executive bureau of FJP agreed on Saturday to accept Katatny’s resignation if elected speaker.
The statement added that Katatny will remain in office temporarily until a new secretary general is elected.
Katatny had suggested resigning from his position in order to remain neutral vis-à-vis all the members of the parliament.
Last week, the largest parties in Egypt’s incoming parliament agreed to select Katatny as house speaker for the first time in decades.
