The US Pentagon announced on Tuesday that the US State Department has approved a potential sale of “Stinger” missiles to Egypt for US$740 million.
The Pentagon explained that, “The prime contractor for the potential sale will be RTX Corporation.”
The US State Department’s spokesperson announced earlier that the administration of US President Joe Biden informed Congress of its intention to disburse the full military aid to Egypt this year at $1.3 billion.
This is the first time since 2020 that Egypt has received the full amount of US aid.
The US State Department considered it an important decision to enhance regional peace in the area and Egypt’s efforts in reaching a Gaza ceasefire.
“This decision is important to advance regional peace and Egypt’s specific and ongoing contributions to U.S. national security priorities, particularly to complete a ceasefire in Gaza, return hostages to their homes, increase humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, and help bring about a permanent end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas,” the State Department spokesperson said.
Earlier in September, the Egyptian-American strategic dialogue was held in Cairo, with the participation of the foreign ministers of the two countries, and a group of Egyptian ministers to discuss joint cooperation in economy, investment, tourism and technology.
