The launch of parliamentary electoral campaigning this weekend was marked by violence, with rival candidates affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) exchanging gunfire in Monoufiya and police encircling a march organized by Muslim Brotherhood (MB) candidates in Assiut.
In Cairo, Sayyed Gadallah, an MB candidate running for the Matareyya constituency, organized a campaign march during which his supporters clashed with police. In Monoufiya, rival NDP candidates for the Shuhada constituency exchanged gunfire.
Residents from Damietta, meanwhile, hurled stones at Gamal al-Zeiny, the NDP candidate for the al-Zarqaa constituency, and his supporters during a campaign march.
In related news, four NDP candidates have already secured uncontested parliamentary seats. They are Nermeen Badrawi and Abeer Hassan (both of whom won seats reserved for women) and Emad el-Darguali for the Badrasheen constituency and Mostafa Samah for the Mansheyyet Nasser constituency.
