A member of the Industry Committee at the House of Representatives, Essam Diab, on Wednesday submitted a request for a briefing to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hanfy Gebaly, addressed to the government, to ban the TikTok platform in Egypt.
He stressed that TikTok is widely-seen as a corrupting influence on society, and has caused the spread of immorality and obscenity among youth.
He added there are many cases that have been referred to the judiciary to implement the legal penalty.
Diab said that the content of the videos posted on TikTok violate Egyptian morals and customs.
According to the latest official statistics, the number of TikTok users has reached 32 million Egyptian users, most of whom are young people and teenagers, he noted.
Diab noted that TikTok has contributed to the creation of misinformation through “trends”.
He also warned that the platform is being used to pump in capital from unknown sources and open a parallel market for suspicious funds that do not fall under laws that monitor the movement of money between users and actors.
Diab added that this contributed to the emergence of using TikTok as a primary source of income, explaining that it relies on the degradation of content to achieve the highest viewing rates.
He pointed out that 19 different countries have decided to block TikTok platform for violating political, financial and societal laws and ethical standards, noting that it has helped in the emergence of a new type of human trafficking.
Diab stressed that this platform is being used as a systematic weapon to destroy entire generations of youth and their future and eliminate the identity of the Egyptian family.
