Parliament Health Committee calls for urgent plan to counter ‘mysterious virus’

Members of the House of Representatives Health Committee called for an urgent plan to fight the "mysterious virus", which led to deaths in some hospitals.

They also stressed the need to cooperate with international bodies that have experience in confronting the virus to prevent its spread.

Health Committee member MP Khaled Helaly called for summoning Health Minister Ahmed Emad Eddin to question him over the issue. He added that the committee needs to know the Ministry's plan to counter the virus.

"Our family is terrified since the death of Malak that other family members might catch the virus," said Reda, the uncle of one of the victims (Malak). Reda explained that another 5-year old child in his family is currently suffering from the same symptoms that Malak suffered from before she died, like vomiting and diarrhea.

The head of the Preventive Medicine Sector at the Ministry of Health, Amr Qandil, said that the situation was not worrying; and that all state authorities, including the president of the republic, are following up on the latest developments, in cooperation with international organizations like the WHO, to identify the causes of the disease.

Eleven people have caught the virus and recovered, while three others have died.

So far, the Ministry of Health has not elucidated the mystery of the disease, although it affected 11 members of one family in Shubra al-Kheima city, Qaliubiya governorate, and caused the death of three children of the same family.

The news has caused panic among other residents of the area, who fear the spread of the mysterious virus that provokes symptoms similar to the flu.
