Parliament approved on Monday proposed amendments to the Police Corps Act, which aim to improve the working and financial conditions of low-ranking police officers.
“I thank Parliament and the military council, and pledge that the police will continue to fight arms smuggling and drugs,” said Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, for which he received a standing ovation.
Some MPs suggested these amendments in response to repeated protests by thousands of low-ranking police officers across the nation demanding better work conditions.
The amendments include changing the wage system, creating a rank of “honor officer” and streamlining promotions.
