Telecoms provider Orange is testing the waters of mass-market Virtual Reality (VR) with an experimental OCS VR channel for the Samsung Gear VR and PlayStation VR.
The Paris, France headquartered telco is teaming up with Californian startup Wevr to offer premium video content in "an immersive VR environment customised to look like a private theatre" from Oct 12, 2016.
From December 1, the Orange VR Experience will start rolling out its Wevr-partnered programme of native VR content, with material sourced from Twentieth Century Fox Innovation Lab, Warner Bros, Felix & Paul Studios, Apelab, InnerspaceVR, Okio studio and Wevr itself.
The company wants to be perceived as innovative and as a first-mover in its field.
Initially intended for France but with a European expansion also in the works, the Orange VR Experience is set to run for a six month trial period.
"We see virtual reality as a new medium that's still in its infancy," said Guillaume Lacroix, SVP Partnerships and Services TV & Video at Orange's Content Division.
"We're looking at the space to better understand the new ways that content will be delivered and consumed in the future as this will impact our activities."
OCS VR will be made available to members of Orange's five channel multiscreen OCS subscription package.
