A police officer was killed and another injured while carrying out an operation to arrest two members of a jihad group in Sinai, according to state news agency MENA.
An official security source told MENA the unsuccessful raid led to the death of First Lieutenant Omar al-Ghadban and the injury of Colonel Roshdy al-Demerdash.
Police had received information proving the involvement of a Palestinian and an Egyptian in gas pipeline explosions in Sinai and attacks on a police station in Arish, it said.
During the raid, an Egyptian with Palestinian origins living nearby shot fire in the direction of the police forces and was arrested, MENA said.
It said the two jihadists escaped, and that a hand grenade, parts of a transistor, mobile phone SIM cards, memory cards and religious books were found at their home.
In August security forces began a crackdown on extremist groups in Sinai in response to a series of attacks in Arish and on the pipeline that takes gas exports to Israel.
